Sweet Uncle Lou’s Friday Roundup: The “Really Short” Edition
It’s late in the day, and you’ve probably already done most of your work avoiding internet reading, so I’m going to keep this brief. After all, I have to get back to my BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL. But since we’re in a rain delay, read this:
- Too bad this guy mentions the IGH knob, because otherwise this article would be a decent read, particularly since I like getting insight on the team from people who aren’t connected to it.
- Typical. Marmol is one of the best relievers in baseball, and some people want me to start him. Great plan. Then, I can put Fukudome in center, have Quade coach first base, and have Sinatro coach third base. It’ll be ANARCHY!!!
- Our good friend PAUL SULLIVAN stabs us right in the back.
Sellout crowds are the norm at Wrigley. Three Cubs are leading in National League All-Star balloting, and viewership is up significantly. Wednesday night’s 2-1, 10-inning win over the Dodgers was the highest-rated Cubs game in May on WGN-TV since a game in New York on May 23, 1991. That was the second game of the forgettable Jim Essian tenure, after he replaced the Fired Don Zimmer when Zimmer gave his bosses an ultimatum to extend his contract.
Why, Paul? WHYYYYYYYY???????
- Why, Jim? WHYYYYYYY?????
- Look, we have the best record in baseball. Boo away, you dumbasses.
Well, it looks like the rain might let up. To quote Ron Santo, “Let’s go get five in a row, big boy.”
Weird.

The Cubs already tried using Marmol as a starter. He was so-so. As Bob Brenly said during the game last night, Marmol being in relief lets him go out there and just air it out for an inning or two. He’s a completely different pitcher in relief then he was as a starter. He wasn’t horrible, but he was nowhere near as dominant or valuable as he’s been in relief.
Well he was so-so in his first major league season, when he really didn’t get many starts. Very few pitchers come up and dominate right away. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t go back to the rotation and be incredible. Of course, there’s also no reason to think he wouldn’t just suck going back in the rotation. I don’t see him starting again, and I don’t think I’d want him to. But that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea to just consider it, cause dominant starters are for more valuable than dominant relievers.
He’s nice and cheap as a reliever. Especially if they keep him in the set up role instead of a closer’s role. The exact reason why Dempster wanted to be a starter again.

I honestly wouldn’t be completely opposed to Marmol starting, but I just don’t see it working out. Obviously, if you can get the same Marmol you get for one inning for 6+, you take it. But he’s probably one of those guys, like Mariano Rivera, that isn’t good as a starter but is incredible as a reliever.
