At 1:00 this afternoon, one of your favorite Cubs will find out if, at long last, his name will be enshrined in Cooperstown. A member of the 400+ Home Run Club, he made his way to Chicago later in his career to the delight of the fans at Wrigley Field. Two years after his arrival in Chicago, the Cubs made the playoffs.
I’m sure you’ll join me in refreshing my browser at 1:00 to see if the Hall of Fame call is made to Fred McGriff. Oh, right. And Andre Dawson. If there’s someone out there who is bigger badass and, by all accounts, a better person than Dawson, they should be knighted and sainted. The argument for Dawson has been made ad nauseam. He deserves this. Put him in the Hall, or I will shoot this kitten.

Oh, and while you’re at it, put Bert Blyleven in there, as well.

“At long last”? Hasn’t it only been a year since the last time the answer was, “No”?
@Chuck – You’re so grumpy.
As an Expo
@Irish Yeti – I totally agree.
@Bad Kermit – I’m actually shocked. I was afeared you thought he should go in as a Cub..
@Irish Yeti – Are you using that “sarcasm” thing again? Dawson was amazing as a Cub, but he was amazing for longer as an Expo.
No. Completely serious. Agreed on the “amazing for longer as an Expo”. I just wasn’t sure if you willfully acknowledged his awesomeness in Montreal. A lot of people don’t.
He’s in!
@$antohof – Hooray! Too bad for Bert, again, but I’m pumped for Dawson.
Link is here.
@Bad Kermit – I don’t get Blyleven or Alomar. They are both deserving.
More people voted for Mark McGuire then Trammell and Don Mattingly. I’m not making a case for them, but how does anyone think that steroid ridden asshole deserves it more then these guys?
Also damn it, if Mark McGuire ever makes the HOF before Ron Santo (yes, I understand they are on different ballots) I will completely lose all faith in humanity.
@santo10 – Except the fact that Mark was a better player…
Also, got a home for that undead kitten, Kermit?
@Irish Yeti – Undead? No, I didn’t have to shoot the kitten. Thanks, HOF voters!
because Donnie Baseball refused to shave his sideburns.
Also the hawk was BBQ sauce slathered bacon.
The HOF criteria in the oast might dictate he goes in as a Cub, since he won his MVP here.
Personally, I don’t give a shit if he goes in as a Marlin. I’m just glad he’s in.
@Fork – Aren’t you forgetting something?
@santo10 – Why would the Cubs VP of Operations, Mark McGuire, deserve induction?? Did he give John McDonough a hall of fame gloss on his shoes?
When I was a little kid and Dawson first came to town, he had a horrible slump. Everybody around here was pissing and moaning about what a disappointment he was and how he should be traded immediately. It was the first time I realized how abysmally daft most people are. Anyway, I wrote him a letter telling him how excited I was he was on the Cubs and how much I’d always enjoyed the rare chances I’d had to see him play when the Expos came to town/were on television. The guy somehow made the time to write a letter back to me, along with an autographed picture and card. Even as a kid I knew how rare it was to find a man willing to extend such an elegant gesture to a little kid from a small town in the middle of nowhere. This is the happiest I’ve ever been for any player.
@Irish Yeti – A lot of people would be better players if they injected their ass everyday with roids.
Congratulations, Mr. Dawson. I never got to see you play in Wrigley, but you hit quite well at Jack Murphy Stadium.
I knew Kerm wasn’t serious – had he been, he would have been shooting a beagle or two.
@santo10 – Yep. Inject me with steroids and I’ll be a HOFer. It’s not like I need to have phenomenal hand-eye coordination or the ability to see some 3 inch wide ball coming in at 80-90 mph from 60 ft away.
Plus, the MLB’s drug policy before this “Steroid Era” was so strict that it was impossible for anybody to have been doing something they shouldn’t have been doing. Either that or players back in the day wouldn’t do something like that b/c they were real men and real baseball players.
I’m not a big fan of Santo, but I find this statement riddled with wrongness. McGwire was a one-dimensional player. While his one dimension was admittedly impressive–hitting a baseball a great distance– it doesn’t make up for the fact that had little else in his arsenal that would compel me to agree that he was a better all-around player than Legs.
I’m very happy for my all-time favorite Cub: Andre Dawson…who yes, should go in as an Expo.
Aside from Hawk getting an honor that he rightfully deserves, the best part about this to me is getting to see all the old footage of Dawson again.
Knee repairs 25 years ago weren’t what they are today (nor was artificial turf)… you can tell from Dawson’s halting strides around the bases that he essentially played the last ten seasons of his career with his knees constantly killing him. And yet he was still the absolute balls.
