I apologize for interrupting your regularly-scheduled Friday HJE, but this is just too stupid to ignore. Last night, Derrek Lee was on second base when Jeff Baker hit a two-strike, two-out home run off of closer Brian Wilson to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead over the Giants. During the dugout celebration, Angel Guzman slapped Lee on the side of his helmet, CAUSING HIS NECK TO SPASM.
In case you’re keeping score, that’s two celebration-related Cub injuries on the year. The other, of course, was Ryan Dempster’s dugout-railing-leaping-toe-breaking antics earlier in the year. This season cannot end soon enough.

Yes, but the Cubs aren’t alone in this regard. ESPN’s Jayson Stark reports that “Mariners catcher Rob Johnson has been out since Friday with a sprained ankle — from landing funny while jumping up and down at home plate, waiting for Ichiro to finish orbiting the bases after a walk-off homer off Mariano Rivera.” And don’t forget the ultimate bad celebration injury: Dave Dravecky re-injuring his cancer-ravaged arm when the Giants were celebrating their victory over the Cubs in the playoffs in ’89. At least Lee won’t have to have anything amputated as the direct result of his injury.
The fact that they’re as stupid as the Mariners doesn’t make me feel any better.
“At least Lee won’t have to have anything amputated as the direct result of his injury.”
Great, now Lee is going to have to have his head amputated. Good job.
There are a few Cubs whose heads I’d like to see amputated. Lee’s not one of them.
Wow, what a bunch of losers.
Wait til next year! Eamus Catuli!!!
I guess it’s a good thing Guzman didn’t slap Lee on the ass…I would’ve hated to see the results of that spasm.
