Rumor has it (and thanks to Oleg for the tip) that the Cubs are about to sign former Devil Ray and former Kansas City Royal outfielder Joey Gathright. He’s fast, and he can catch the ball, so the signing would make sense for, say, the Bears. But he can’t hit. Like, at all. Unless you count hitting Julian Tavarez in the face. And, really, that SHOULD count. This spells DOOM for Felix Pie, so we might as well go ahead and start the rampant speculation that this means Pie will be traded for Jake Peavy, Alex Rodriguez, and Brian Roberts.

This guy sucks! Zero HR last year!! I want Ward or Hauffpauir.
Ward of Hoffpauier? What about ADAM DUNN?
Maybe Adam Dunn can wear Gathright inside his uni to go catch the ball in RF, and take him out to bat. No way you’d ever know Dunn had another human in his skivvies.
Dude can jump over cars though.
Theriot had 0 HR last year. He must suck too.
BK,
Hitting Julian Tavares in the face should count for something – to this, I agree. Why I don’t know, but I have an irrational dislike of Tavares. If the Padres pick him up this year (and there’s no reason to think that he won’t change teams again, right?) then this will be another sign of The End Of Days. Of course, the Pads will again likely sucketh mightily next year, with or without Tavares, so what’s my point?
Why would the Cubs sign Gaithright? The team already has enough players that can’t hit (witness the last playoffs). You’ve got bench defense already. Why would they do this? Geez, is Sweet Uncle Lou showing his age already?
Has anyone figured how many days to Spring Training? It’s -18C here in Kamloops, and even if I had someone to play catch with, my glove would crack into shards of leather.
@CactusMcHarris – I think it means that Pie is going to be gone via trade, and Gathright is in Chicago to take his spot.
Kevin – theriot had one HR, and i want to say it was against some POS player on the orioles.
But, but, he bats lefty…
Our own Scotty Pods. Awesome.
*sigh*
Freddie Bynum 2.0!
It must be nice to be a GM filling this spot. This is how I see it. Hendry: “Hmmm, I need another fast kid that can field, but can’t hit his way out of a paper bag. Let’s google it…Wow! So many to choose from! This is way easier than finding a solid RF who can hit well from the left side! (devours entire can of pringles in one fluid move).”
@Kevin – There’s a huge difference between an OF with zero HR & a SS. Even though Theriot is fast he’s bad baserunner. Theriot is also a shitty defender in pressure situations. Remember the Giants game throwing a rainbow on his back into RF? If he simply held the ball the Cubs woulda won. What is your point, we need more guys with zero HR?
Theriot’s job isn’t to hit HRs. If Gathright could wear a groove into the opposite field like Theriot did this past season, nobody here would have any right to complain about him.
I’m not sure Gathright could match Theriot’s 2008 BA or OBP. Not even in batting practice.
My point is that guys don’t have to hit HR to be considered valuable players.
This is one of those times when I start to wonder if Hendry is actually a good GM. Gathright is Pie without the upside and less defensive talent. What the fuck was the point? There’d better be a monster trade in the works that Pie had to be in to justify this shit.
