I’m not going to get into an argument about whether or not Ron Santo deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. The argument has been made ad nauseum. I just wish these crusty old bastards would put him in so we don’t have to keep arguing about it (thanks to TJ Brown for the link). Santo missed out on his Cooperstown plaque yet again, capturing only 39 of the 48 votes needed for induction. It will be a real shame if what I expect to happen happens: Santo gets into the Hall of Fame posthumously. If he deserves it, let the guy enjoy it while he’s still around.

Forget his numbers & the fact that the pitching in his era was so much better that they didn’t even have 5th starters Santo deserves to be in the Hall simply because he was a diabetic. He overcame the odds everyday. He leads all diabetics in every category in all sports. Someday it will happen & it should be now so we can stop talking about it.
Assholes…
Santo’s schtick has long worn out its welcome on the radio, but Christ, whose wives did he fuck to deserve this?
I can’t help but wonder if his presence on the radio is killing his chances these days. He’s such a caricature. Gotta wonder if he’d have a better shot if he had a lower profile.
I think that his presence on the radio is almost certainly helping him more than hurting him. If he didn’t have iconic stature, it’d be difficult to imagine he’d get get in posthumously either.
Santo compares well to no doubt Hall of Famer Wade Boggs and puts Brooks Robinson to shame and they were from the same era.
Two truths.
1) By every metric, Ron Santo the ballplayer deserves enshrinement. His omission is unreasonable.
2) At this point, whatever it takes to get Ron Santo the broadcaster outta my radio works. I don’t even care anymore, but for the fact his act is so pathetic that it interferes with enjoyment of Pat Hughes’ call and has increasingly robbed him of more and more sympathy from me.
The thing that bugs me is that the Hall has never used someone’s career being cut short as justification for leaving them out. But that’s exactly what they’re doing with Ron, in effect.
Ron’s diabetes — manifested at a time when much less was known about the condition and treatment was inadequate at best — cut 3-4 years minimum off his playing days, without dispute. Even factoring in a late-career fade in his numbers, this would have made him a no-doubt pick just on volume. His numbers are Hall-worthy as they stand, but voters have “projected” numbers to give a few guys with shortened careers the boost needed to get in in the past.
To Ron’s credit, he’s never advanced this argument on his behalf. But someone powerful should.
And for the record, Gil Hodges getting passed over again was horseshit, as well.
