Shockingly, it appears that the Cubs are somehow the frontrunner in the Jake Peavy sweepstakes. If Jim Hendry pulls this trade off, he will have traded for Rich Harden and Peavy, two of the best pitchers in the game, over the course of about four months. And he will have done it with a farm system that stinks worse than an actual farm.
Assuming the Peavy trade goes through (possibly as early as this weekend), which trade is better? For the purposes of this poll, we’re going to assume that Hendry gets Peavy for all of the names Bruce Miles mentions in his column about the potential trade: Sean Marshall, Felix Pie, Ronny Cedeno, and Jose Ceda. To be honest, though, the trade could include Carlos Marmol and it would still probably be a great one for the Cubs. Even if the Cubs don’t hang on to Ryan Dempster and end up stuck with Jason Marquis, the Cubs’ rotation would easily be the best one I’ve ever seen.
Peavy, Carlos Zambrano, Harden, Ted Lilly, and Marquis is practically unfair. That’s three #1 starters, a #2 or #3 starter, and (like him or not) one of the best #5 starters in baseball.

That would be an awesome rotation. And Peavy’s not a bad hitter – although his post-season batting stats fit right in with the Cubs.
If Hendry is able to pull this off. I’m gonna have to make handmade coupons offering myself to wash his car in nothing but jorts and a “wifebeater” in the middle of January.
And dear lord no one really wants to see that but by god I’d do it if it landed the cubs Peavy for essentially Marshall and the items that make a bindle
@Steve Buechele’s Blond Mullet – I don’t always agree with Hendry’s free agent signings, but he makes some damn good trades. Ramirez and Lofton for nothing, Lee for nothing, Harden for basically nothing. If he pulls this off, it would be ridiculous.
Im not as knowledgeable as 99% of the posters on here, but if we were to keep Dempster and get Peavy, the Cubs 2009 starting rotation would have to be up there in the greatest of all time right?
@BillyLikesSoda – I would think yes, but then again I’m always WRONG
@BillyLikesSoda – Always leave room for injuries and bad luck; however, I’d say it’s safe to assume they’d be the favorite to win the division again. Even if Derrecles has turned into Pedro Cerrano from “Major League II”.
