William Howard Taft’s brother Charles OWNED the Cubs for a few years, as a minority partner to Charles Murphy in the aughts, and as majority owner from 1914 until a court order made him sell his shares to Charles Weeghman.

Nixon was a huge baseball fan. There were no California teams when he was growing up, so he became a Washington Senators fan. After the Senators relocated in 1969, he sent out his Press Secretary to announce that he considered the California Angels his new home team.

Nixon was also the HUEBITER for the 1985 umpire’s strike.

I’m not sure which team Ike liked, but he went to definitely a few Senators games.

Nixon only loved football. I’ve never heard, read, etc., mention of his baseball fanhood, but he looooooved him some football, to the point of obsession. Early in the ’72 campaign, he actually invited Hunter Thompson (noted leftist, but fellow football junkie) to share his car with one caveat – only football talk. It might be true, it might not; after all, HST wrote it. Either way, the man did not care for baseball. Though it would be better if we could produce evidence he was a Thirdinals fan.

The funny thing about the Roosevelt thing is that I looked it up, and it turns out that FDR didn’t develop polio until he was well into adulthood–a rarity, but I figured that I didn’t want to let facts get in the way of a good joke, so I left it in.

Good point about Truman, who was from the state of Missourah (Independence). I reckon he may have witnessed the dawning of the Tardinals first great era in the late 20′s.

Incidentally, haven’t 3 of the last 4 Presidents been southpaws? I’m pretty sure Bush, Sr., Clinton, and now Obama are all left-handed. Apparently, so is McCain. Lefties of the world unite!
