Any Major Dude,

That's part of my issue as well. Good 1B are hard to come by. Derrek may be on the decline, but I think it was unrealistic to expect 2005 numbers from him every year, especially after the 06 wrist injury. It's healed, but I still think that's one of the hardest injuries to recover from where the swing is concerned. Even after the player is completely healed, the healing process may have altered the player's stroke. The double plays are a concern, but he tied with Vladimir Guerrero, so he's in good company (although Vladdy is certainly entering his decline years as well). I just don't believe we're going to get someone better than Derrek via trade or free agency and I don't see Hoffpauier as the long term answer. I think we need to let DLee play out his contract and hope there's an attractive replacement via trade, free agency, or (unlikely) our own system.

Besides, as you say, Derrek is a good guy. And my wife would stop watching Cub games with me if we were to trade him.

Jack B:

Yeah I agree with you. I'm personally not happy with D Lee's performance this year and I'm pessimistic about next season. You have to assume he's in a phase of gradual decline. But who else is out there that we might actually be able to sign? His numbers aren't in the stratosphere but he's good defensively and his offensive production is above average. We could be better off at first base, but we could also be a hell of a lot worse off.

I don't really know how I feel about how much difference batting order actually makes. Lots of different studies out there and math is (for me) hard.

Plus I just plain like D. Lee. If we could get someone better I'd be willing to like D. Lee in another uniform, but I don't see us being able to improve on him without giving up so much that it costs our ability to upgrade other areas where we need it more.

Aaargh. I knew I shouldn't have read the post, but I did. Now I'm even dumber than before. Thank you, Muskrat, for that.

Also, last I checked, Derek Jeter (the Yanks' second best shortstop) is Captain Intangibles. On the plus side, he is probably not currently / nor ever in the past, sexing teh Madonna.

Atleast Brian Robert's Grandma won't hop every time she catches a routine fly ball in left. Probably because she's in a wheelchair. But hey, she'll also draw alot more walks then Soriano.

Hey BK,

That's a great picture of Papa.

The Cubs should get Peavy - he should pitch for a team that doesn't fold in the clutch......wait, perhaps I should reword that.

Sign Furcal, move Theriot back to 2b, DeRosa to RF, Fukudome to CF to platoon w/ Reed. The only problem with that is that (1) Furcal has big time injury problems, and (2) Fontenot does not play every day. If you extrapolate his #'s from last year over a full season he .280/20/80 potential, and I for one would like to see him play every day.

Jesus, what's up with all the Derrek Lee hate? Yeah, he hit into a buncha double plays and his HR totals are down. He's still one of the best first sackers in the game and his numbers were hardly unproductive. We need to move Soriano down in the order and Lee needs to be the #2 or #6 hitter. Getting rid of him for what-Hoffpauier-is just stupid. We're not getting Texieria. Any other 1B available is a downgrade from DLee, unless we could somehow fleece the Pads out of Adrian Gonzalez, which ain't happening. The Johnson-Fukudome platoon actually sounds like a reasonable plan, provided we can find a left handed stick to play right. With DeRosa and Fontenot, that actually gives us a lot of possibilities to mix and match with. You get a guy like Ibanez, trade for Peavy (unlikely), sign a Derek Lowe (more likely), resign Wood, and move on. This team shit the bed in the playoffs, but won 97 regular season games. Ideally, we could sign Furcal and then ship Theriot to SD in a Peavy package, but payroll will probably be prohibitive.

Surprisingly, Brian's dog has less range than Cliff Floyd. Go figure...</blockquote>

Ed Hartig just wrote to me and cleared all this up, for once and for all. According to Ed, dogs lack color stereovision and opposable thumbs. Not only does Brian's dog have trouble reading balls off the bat, but he can't hit the cut-off man.

The obvious solution would be for Brian Roberts to conceive or adopt another infant son during the offseason. By 2012, I think you're looking at a 68 win team.
