Five Reasons Cubs Fans Shouldn’t Panic

Earlier today, I was asked to come up with Five Reasons Cubs Fans Shouldn’t Panic for SI.com’s “FanNation.” It made me feel better doing it, so hopefully it’ll make you feel better reading it. Also, comments like, “You should totally hire this guy as SI.com’s Cubs beat reporter” would be much appreciated.

BallHype: hype it up!

Are we still talking about the ‘08 Cubs? That was so yesterday.

I’m really into this cup-and-ball now!

You should totally hire Jim Essian as HJE’s Cubs beat reporter.

Congratulations, Mr. Big Time.

Nice Piece Kerm. I’ll be at the game Saturday and have tickets for Sunday. I hope this wasn’t the last game at Wrigley since it will be Verizon Field at Wrigley Park next year.

I think we just saw Clark Kent take off his glasses.

Yeah, I’ve been trying to talk myself into the rest of the series for similar reasons. Sure, it’s more or less unsupported optimism at this point, but it’s probably better to be optimistic and proved wrong than to be a pessimistic schlump who can’t enjoy it if they do win.

Well done. *clap*clap*

Well done. The points about Ted Lilly being awesome (if you take away the times that he wasn’t) and Kosuke being terrible (if you away the times he played well) is kind of suspect. Kosuke could have gotten figured out by the National Leauge around June, but he didn’t forget how to lay off the breaking ball during the all-star break. Lilly, likewise, didn’t see a light on the road to Damascus and realize how to throw a breaking ball for strikes. The fact that poor performances are grouped early or late in a season is often just a statistical anomaly. That’s why we keep cumulative statistics.

Kermit, I think we should have dinner and a movie. Keep it friendly at first and then see where it goes. Seriously, nice article.

@GNM - I disagree. I wasn’t taking out their bad performances, but rather pointing out the trends for both players, which I think is a valid argument. For the most part, Lilly has improved each month of this season. For the most part, Fukudome has gotten worse each month. I consider that as valid a predictor of how they’re going to perform this month as any. I don’t expect either one of them to suddenly revert to their May/June form, which is good for Lilly, bad for Kosuke.

Sellout
