Someday We’ll Go All the Way
You know, if J-Kerm ever decides to leave me, I suspect it’s going to be for Eddie Vedder. She called me today, excited to the point of being–dare I say–breathless. I had heard Eddie Vedder’s “Someday We’ll Go All the Way” a while ago, but completely forgot to post about it. Well, J-Kerm had just heard it on the radio, and demanded I post it. So, here you go, J-Kerm.
Someday We’ll Go All the Way by Eddie Vedder
I’ve always loved Pearl Jam, and Eddie is an actual Cubs fan (listen through to the end for his great dig on the White Sox), who I bet could quote you Soriano’s stats as your girlfriend humps him with her eyes. The song is about a thousand times better than “Don’t Stop Believin’”, which might have been used in the 2005 postseason if the postseason hadn’t been canceled. I have a feeling it’s going to get a hell of a lot of air time in the coming weeks. I know it will on my computer. However, since Eddie isn’t the best at enunciation, this guy was kind enough to translate some of the rough spots. The lyrics are below.
EDIT: Thanks to dberryhill9 in the comments below, we have an even better version HERE.
“Someday We’ll Go All the Way”
Yeah, don’t let them say that it’s just a game.
Well, I’ve seen other teams, and it is never the same.
When you go to Chicago, you’re blessed and you’re healed,
The first time you walk into Wrigley Field.
Heroes with pinstripes and heroes in blue,
Give us the chance to feel like heroes do.
Whether we’ll win and if we should lose,
We know someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
We are one with the Cubs,
With the Cubs we’re in love.
Hold our heads tall as the underdogs.
We are not fairweather, but farweather fans.
Like brothers in arms, in the streets and the stands.
There’s magic in the ivy and the old scoreboard.
The same one I stared at as a kid keeping score.
In a world full of greed, we could never want more.
And someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
Well, someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
And here’s to the men and the legends we’ve known.
Giving us faith and giving us hope.
United we stand, and united we’ll fall,
Down to our knees the day we win it all.
Yeah Ernie Banks said, “Oh, let’s play two!”
I think he meant two hundred years.
Playing at Wrigley, our diamond, our jewel.
The home of our joy and our fears.
Keeping traditions, and wishes anew,
The place where our grandfathers’ fathers they grew.
The spiritual feeling if I ever knew.
And when the day comes for that last winning run,
And I’m crying and covered with beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.
Yeah, someday we’ll go all the way.

I agree with you frodog. the song kinda hits you. hopefully we can sing this song soon with a chorus of “today we’ll go all the way”
Also… if you guys want the link to a D/l site where he coaches the crowd at teh Roosevelt performance… (the one being played on XRT), which has no break, here is the link
Hi, I found your blog on this new directory of WordPress Blogs at blackhatbootcamp.com/listofwordpressblogs. I dont know how your blog came up, must have been a typo, i duno. Anyways, I just clicked it and here I am. Your blog looks good. Have a nice day. James.
dberryhill9, you’re my new hero. I already had the version Kerm linked. Thank you for what you uploaded.
@dberryhill9 - That version is incredible. I’m going to add it at the bottom of the post. Thanks a lot!

I’m blocked from that site at work so I sent the link home. Mrs. flannj is raving about it. Can’t wait till this evening to give it a listen.
Thanks guys.
Awesome– thanks for the post. Vedder does love Chicago (it’s one of like 3 cities that he’s from, somehow), and Pearl Jam always bring the thunder when they play shows there. Plus, I love the Vedder-ized pronunciation of “Wrig-uh-lee Field”.
@Flem - He needed the extra syllable!
I first heard this song in 2006 at the Randy Hundley Fantasy Camp. I was lucky enough to ‘hang out’ with Eddie because he was a fellow camper. He played this song at the banquet on the final day of camp, and I’m so happy to see it come out finally. As many of the posts before me said, there were very few dry eyes in the house. He finished the song and handed the guitar to Randy Hundley as a momento. One of the coolest moments of my life.
CAPO 3rd Fret
Verse
G chord shape (actually a Bb)
C9 chord shape (actually a E9)
Chorus

Eddie does some noodling around but this feels like
it’s right
Hope this can help anyone looking to play on guitar
My sister sent me a message telling me about this song. I searched it out and found your blog. I’m deployed to Iraq for the next six or seven (or eight or nine) months but having a link to the Cubs keeps me sort of “grounded.” Hard to explain. My roommate is from Texas so he didn’t understand why this song got me a bit misty. Thank you for the lyrics and two great versions of the song.
@SGT John - God bless, SGT John. Take care of yourself and your brothers over there, and THANK YOU for all that you’re doing for us and our country.
Great song, thanks for posting. This stanza is just perfect:
And when the day comes for that last winning run,
And I’m crying and covered with beer.
I look to the sky and know I was right today.
Someday we’ll go all the way.
my god how i hope it plays out exactly like this…. Beer abuse will be perfectly acceptable!!!
WOW!
I am blown away by Eddie’s song!! It also brings tears to my eyes.
It’s got to be the best Cubs song written because Eddie captures EXACTLY the emotions we Cubs fans feel every day “our Boys of Summer” play.
It’s magical, it’s emotional, and it’ll go all the way forever!
Who knew that Eddie could write something positive and happy!
GO CUBS GO! OOF WAH!! EAMUS CATULI!!
Do the Cubs really need a song? I couldn’t care less if the season is characterized best by the Backstreet Boys. “Go, Cubs! Go!” is bad enough. This seems a little bush league to me.
Great song. Couple of changes - maybe it’s a different version I’m hearing on XRT. I would change ‘farweather’ to ‘foulweather.’ And ’suites’ to ’streets.’ I’ve been to many PJ shows, and one show at Allstate, Eddie poked fun at the people in the luxury suites. Plus, I think Eddie would be the kind of guy celebrating on Waveland instead of a suite.
@FD - I think you’re right about “streets,” but the jury is still out on “______weather.” I’ll change it to streets.

“We are not fair weather but fall weather fans!”
Kermit–
If your wife is going to leave you for a fat middle age guy who can’t sing, I hope it is me.
How does this make you a queer…are all those who shared their emotions after 9/11 queers too? Open your mind a little and get in touch with your emotions.
Wow!! I live in Chicago and know the magic of Wrigley Field and the plight of the Cubbies first hand. Now, I will join my son, David and be one of Eddie Vedder’s biggest fans!! What a voice and how he tells it like it is! Thanks Eddie!!! You ROCK! I am sure this is the year!
@Heather - thanks for encouraging male tears…this season will end in tears for sure. hopefully the happy kind

This strikes me as a singularly odd analogy.
Queer, even.

Good stuff.
Funny, too, that Eddie’s contemporary Billy Corrigan is also a legitimate Cubs fan. Corrigan recently talked about how he agreed to sing the 7th Inning Stretch for Game 7 in ‘03 and how painful it turned out to be after Dave Fucknuts Veres put the game out of reach. Corrigan said it was like being at a wake and the experience cleary embittered him.
