Remember way back to September 1, 2003, when the Cubs started that five-game series in Wrigley Field against the first-place Cardinals, and ended up mauling them and passing them in the standings? Antonio Alfonseca also got suspended for being so fat that he couldn’t get his belly out of the way of umpire Justin Klemm. That series was pretty outstandingly awesome. So was going up to Wrigley North with a one-game lead, manhandling the Brewers, and waving good-bye to their suddenly-cocky fans as the Cubs shook the dust from Milwaukee off their cleats with a five-game lead. Which was more awesome, though?

Crushing the Brew Crew was nice, but the Cards are more hated and it was closer to October.
This Brewers series was awesome, but other than game 1, it was kind of a blowout. There were some incredible, close games in that Cardinals series. I was at the first game of the day-night double-header when Sosa hit the walkoff shot in the 14th, which was awesome. There was that bullshit call on the Alou double that night that got him and Alfonseca tossed. I believe the day before that was when they came back from a pretty big deficit once Ditka came on to sing the stretch. All-in-all, 2003 was definitely better than this series.
I’m actually pretty surprised this thing is as close as it is.
This past series with Milwaukee was sweet but beating the Cardinals pretty much always means more. At least personally, I hate the Cardinals, I just “eh, who cares” the Brewers.
My first ever game at Miller Park was this last Tuesday when Z manhandled the Brewers. Plus there’s the “What have you done for me lately?” factor a little.
Beating the Brewers last week was nice, but nothing compares to that 03 Cardinal series. That series changed the momentum of the remaining season for both teams. It remains to be seen how last week’s series will impact the division race. Those 03 games were really something special to watch and the Cubs team became something bigger after that series. That’s really when I started believing that 2003 might be the year. Of course it wasn’t, but that series was a necessary step toward the playoffs.
