A three-game losing streak by the Brewers coupled with a two-game winning streak by the Cubs has left the Cubs a half game behind the Brewers for the lead in the NL Central and one game behind the Dodgers and the Diamondbacks for the lead in the NL Wild Card race. More importantly, the Cubs have one fewer loss than the Brewers.
Two days from the trade deadline, and the Cubs are masters of their own destiny.
Here are your rumors; fire away:
- The Cubs have contacted the Rangers about left-hander Ron Mahay and catcher Gerald Laird.
- Kerry Wood might be back before the end of the upcoming homestand.
- The Griffey rumors will not go away, as Paul Sullivan writes a glowing article about Junior.
What are they going to do (feel free to add your own choices)?

well i don’t think we’re getting dye because the White Sox want marmol….
…for him.
I’m thinking a minor bullpen move and that’s about it. I’d be more than ok with it too. This team is a pleasure to watch.
Why do we want Gerald Laird? He sucks.
We already had Ron Mahay in ’01 so why do we need him in ’07?
Bring back Kenny Lofton was me … I remember 2003 when I was thinking, this is our big trade move? Kenny Lofton? he’s like 100 years old! (well i guess 104 now). But him and Randall Simon turned out to be good enough, and Aramis turned out … well you know
I’m going tomorrow and I’m jumping out of my skin, Im so excited. They make me love them even more when they make it INTERESTING! Go Cubs!
Gerald Laird is the best offensive catcher available. Offense from catchers this year, league wide, has been way down. I wished they had gone after Lofton but Cleveland snapped him up a few days ago.
I voted for one more arm in the bullpen, but Griffey in Cub blue makes my pants get tight.

Looks as though Mahay is out of the question as he is going to Atlanta…
The bullpen move will be to bring up Wood. They need another solid bat in the outfield and can live with what they got in the bullpen.
