CHICAGO–Cubs center fielder Alfonso Soriano was injured Monday night trapping an RBI single. An RBI single which was hit by Clay Hensley, the San Diego Padres’ starting pitcher.
So, why was Cubs general manager Jim Hendry all smiles after watching his $136M man go down with a hamstring injury?
“No worries,” a jubilant Hendry said after the game, a 12-4 Cubs win. “I keep receipts for everything,” Hendry explained, pulling a crumpled receipt from the folds of his wallet. The receipt read, “ONE SECOND BASEMAN LEFT FIELDER CENTER FIELDER AND LEADOFF HITTER. $136,000,000.00″
“The Nationals have a 90-day return policy as long as you have a receipt,” Hendry said happily. “I still have his original Nationals uniform packaging, and everything, so there should be no problem.”
As for a replacement for Soriano, prospect Felix Pie has been tearing the cover off the ball in AAA ball so far. If Soriano is out for an extended period of time, many Cubs fans hope that Pie will get an opportunity to patrol center field in his absence.
UPDATE: 1060 West is reporting that Pie has been called up and is starting in center field today.
SECOND UPDATE: Finally, a real source confirms that the Wonderboy is up. No word on what move was made to accommodate Pie, but here’s hoping that Will Ohman is on his way to Iowa.
UPDATE THREE: THE FINAL CHAPTER: Angel Guzman was the one sent down to Iowa. So far, Pie is 0-2 with a groundout to second and a flyout to left.
Nope Guzman went to Iowa. Hopefully to get a couple starts in before he comes back and replaces Miller in the damn rotation.
