JUPITER, Fla.–St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa was arrested early Thursday morning on a DUI charge.
Police became suspicious after LaRussa’s car sat running, but motionless at a traffic light through two cycles of green. Initially, LaRussa did not respond to police officers knocking at his window. After several minutes, he woke up and parked the car.
Officers noticed a smell of alcohol and Axe body spray on LaRussa, and conducted a field sobriety test on him. LaRussa was then sent to the Palm Beach County Jail, where his blood alcohol content was tested and revealed to be .093. Florida’s legal driving limit is .080.
LaRussa also tested positive for Rohypnol, the “date rape drug.” When asked about the presence of the drug in his system, LaRussa said that he had been out drinking with Cardinals center fielder Jim Edmonds. LaRussa had been buying drinks for the two all evening, and recalled Edmonds repeatedly saying that he was “getting his Axe effect on.” The last thing LaRussa remembered was Edmonds buying the final round of drinks. LaRussa awoke in his car several hours later with no recollection of how he got there, and with a border collie in his backseat.
The Palm Beach police department has brought in Edmonds for questioning.
